Giuseppe Dardano

Marcedusa 1792 – Santo Stefano 1856

Having moved to Naples, he founded and presided over the “Circolo del Progresso”, a meeting place for the opponents of Ferdinand II, King of the Two Sicilies. A man of liberal ideas, he took part in the revolutionary uprisings of 1848 and was therefore arrested and sentenced to death: “Guilty of having incited, through speeches in public places and printed writings, the crime of conspiracy and of attack against the internal security of the state”. The sentence was later commuted to life imprisonment, to be served in the prison on the island of Santo Stefano, off Ventotene, where he died on 6 January 1856.

Era uomo: sia pace alla sua memoria».In his Epistolario (Letters), Luigi Settembrini, his companion in struggle and in prison, remembers him thus: “Dardano died on the day of the Epiphany: he was buried at the expense of a few of us. He was a man: may his memory rest in peace.”

Giuseppe Dardano diede alle stampe due libri: il primo, Prospetto Generale di Riforma del Regno delle Due Sicilie, nel 1832; il secondo, Progetto di Costituzione Politica Universale, nel 1848.Giuseppe Dardano published two books: the first, Prospetto Generale di Riforma del Regno delle Due Sicilie (General Plan for the Reform of the Kingdom of the Two Sicilies), in 1832; the second, Progetto di Costituzione Politica Universale (Draft of a Universal Political Constitution), in 1848.
