Vita di un uomo

Quando nacqui ero troppo piccolo
per intendere ciò che accadeva:
con mio padre che mi guardava
e mia madre che mi allattava.

Crebbi senza pensieri
tra anni semplici e leggeri
poi, col cielo ormai oscurato,
mi ritrovai soldato.

“Scusi, le andrebbe di ballare?”
In un giorno molto speciale
e senza neanche poter pensare
avevo un sì da pronunciare.

I miei figli divennero grandi
tra le domande imbarazzanti
io nel lavoro mi rifugiai
e mia moglie trascurai.

La vecchiaia fu pesante
e la gioventù ormai distante
cominciai allora a capire
che il tempo non sa mentire.

Quando ormai, tardi, compresi
che quel che conta nella vita
è saper vivere ogni istante
la mia storia era già finita.

A man’s life

When I was born I was too small
to grasp what was unfolding:
my father looking at me
my mother nursing me.

I grew up with no worries
through simple and carefree years
then, with the sky grown dark,
I found myself a soldier.

“Excuse me, would you like to dance?”
On a day so special
and without even time to think
I had a yes to give.

My children grew up
amid awkward questions
I took refuge in my work
and neglected my wife.

Old age felt heavy
and youth so far away
only then did I begin to see
that time never lies.

By the time I understood, too late,
that what truly counts in life
is knowing how to live each moment
my story was over.
