e senza parole ogni giorno insegnano.

Quando la storia dei grandi si scrive
nei libri, nei marmi, nei nomi eterni
rimane il silenzio di quelle mani
che ci hanno protetto dagli inverni.

Hands that labor

There are hands that hold the world together
though the world never sees them:
hands that knead before dawn
hands that sew what you will wear.

Hands cracked by the cold of the fields
hands hardened by the sun and the moon
hands that lift mortar and bricks
homes for others, with no home of their own.

No one applauds them when evening comes
oblivion erases their portraits
yet it’s from them that the day is born
the stairs washed clean, the beds remade.

They seek neither glory nor a voice
they know the gesture is enough in itself
it’s in toil unseen by all
that the mark of life is engraved.

A mother’s hands that cradle and love
a father’s hands that shun no task
humble hands that ask for nothing
and teach without words each day.

When the history of the great is written
in books, in marble, in eternal names
there remains the silence of those hands
that sheltered us from the winters.
